Cutback bitumen

Liquid asphalt is bitumen dissolved in an aromatic hydrocarbon, petroleum, or another solvent. The standard process involves heating the bitumen to reduce its viscosity and then mixing it with an appropriate hydrocarbon fraction. The resulting bituminous solution is used as a primer material, a bitumen thinner, or a material to serve as a priming layer for aggregate before applying subsequent asphalt layers.
